"My work this year has been concerned with the Other – what fascinates us about difference, how the unknowable both frightens us away and beckons us closer. I drew inspiration from the institution of the freak show, of monsters both real and imaginary, and the societal construction of otherness.
‘Here Are Our Monsters’ is the title of my body of work for this year. In November it will be installed in a small room within an art gallery. The intent is to create a cluttered, oppressive and eccentric atmosphere. I see the dolls as instinctual and childlike in aspect; the paintings their more oppressed, more civilized ancestors. My hope is that as with Christine Webster’s ‘Black Carnival’, the viewer will find themself with the only ‘normal’ body in a room full of freaks, and thus an outsider – at once both the gawking audience member and the creature in the cage. This duality cannot be sustained, leading to empathy, ownership, or perhaps even kinship.
‘Here Are Our Monsters’ questions what drives us to fascination and fear of the strange, but it also celebrates the seductive, exciting freedom felt in being different."
